Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that causes red, scaly patches and can range from mild to severe. At our clinic, we provide personalized treatment plans to manage symptoms, reduce flare ups, and improve skin health, helping patients achieve greater comfort and confidence.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune and autoinflammatory skin condition that causes the rapid buildup of skin cells, leading to red, inflamed plaques with thick silver scaling. It can develop at any age, affects men and women equally, and often runs in families.

Psoriasis is not contagious. It occurs in cycles — with periods of flare-ups followed by clear skin. At Skinnova Medical & Aesthetics Clinic in Hamilton, Ontario, our physician-led team provides personalized, evidence-based psoriasis care tailored to the severity of your condition and your individual skin type. No referral is needed to book a consultation.

How it Works

What Causes Psoriasis?

Psoriasis occurs when the immune system mistakenly accelerates the skin cell growth cycle, causing cells to build up rapidly on the surface. While the exact cause is not fully understood, genetics play a significant role — psoriasis often runs in families.

Common triggers that can precipitate flares include:

  • Stress
  • Illness, especially strep throat
  • Smoking and alcohol
  • Skin trauma or injury
  • Hormonal changes
  • Certain medications

Hamilton patients managing psoriasis are encouraged to identify and minimize personal triggers as part of their overall treatment plan.

What Does Psoriasis Look Like?

Psoriasis can appear in several forms, sometimes at the same time. Our Hamilton physicians are experienced in identifying and treating all types of psoriasis:

Plaque Psoriasis The most common type, characterized by raised red plaques with white or silver scaling. Often found on the scalp, elbows, knees, or trunk.

Guttate Psoriasis Small, round, scaly red plaques scattered across the body that resemble rain drops. This type often develops following a strep throat infection.

Inverse Psoriasis Smooth, red patches appearing in skin folds such as the underarms or groin. In individuals with darker skin tones, these may appear purplish, brown, or darker than surrounding skin.

Pustular Psoriasis Fluid-filled or pus-filled blisters on red skin, most commonly appearing on the hands or feet.

Nail Psoriasis Nail pitting, thickening, and discolouration. Approximately half of all patients with psoriasis develop nail changes at some point.

Psoriatic Arthritis Approximately one third of patients with psoriasis also develop inflammation in their joints — a condition called psoriatic arthritis. This causes pain, swelling, and stiffness, especially in the small joints of the hands, wrists, feet, and ankles. If left untreated, psoriatic arthritis can lead to permanent joint damage and deformity.

If you have psoriasis and notice new or worsening joint pain, it is important to see a physician as soon as possible. Skinnova’s Hamilton clinic can assess your symptoms and initiate appropriate treatment to prevent long-term joint damage.

Psoriasis Treatment Options in Hamilton

While there is no cure for psoriasis, there are many effective ways to manage symptoms and significantly reduce flare-ups. At Skinnova’s Hamilton clinic, our physicians tailor treatment to the individual patient based on the type, location, and severity of psoriasis.

Treatment options available at our Hamilton and Stoney Creek clinic include:

Prescription Topical Treatments Creams, gels, and ointments applied directly to the skin. These include corticosteroids (cortisone) as well as non-steroid options to reduce inflammation and slow skin cell buildup.

Light Therapy (Phototherapy) Controlled exposure to UV light to slow the rapid growth of skin cells. Light therapy is a well-established, effective option for moderate to severe psoriasis and is available at our Hamilton clinic.

Oral Medications Systemic oral medications that work throughout the body to reduce inflammation and manage psoriasis from within.

Biologic Therapies Injectable targeted therapies called biologics are the newest and most effective psoriasis treatments currently available. Biologics work by targeting specific parts of the immune system responsible for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. Our Hamilton physicians can assess whether biologics are appropriate for your case and coordinate care accordingly.

A combination of treatments is often the most effective approach. Your Skinnova physician will develop a personalized plan and monitor your progress over time.

Most cases are manageable with proper, physician-guided care. At Skinnova’s Hamilton clinic, we take a comprehensive approach to ensure both your skin and overall health are considered in your treatment plan.

What can trigger a psoriasis flare?

Common triggers include stress, illness, skin injury, hormonal changes, smoking, alcohol, and certain medications. Identifying and managing your personal triggers is an important part of long-term psoriasis management. Our Hamilton team will work with you to identify your specific triggers.

Who can get psoriasis?

Anyone can develop psoriasis, though it is more common in individuals with a family history of the condition. Psoriasis is not contagious and cannot be spread from person to person.

When should I see a doctor for psoriasis?

You should see a physician if you notice persistent red, scaly plaques or rashes, or if you experience any unexplained joint pain, stiffness, or swelling alongside your skin symptoms. Early assessment and treatment at our Hamilton clinic can prevent psoriasis from worsening and reduce the risk of long-term joint damage.
